Two Big 8 Performers, Fresno's Leffel Make Up NorCal Player/Co-Pitchers Of The Week #3
Sacramento City College third baseman Hayden Shoup and two hurlers--Diablo Valley's Calvin Johnson and Fresno City's Nathan Leffel--are the CCCBCA NorCal Player/Co-Pitchers of the Week #3. All three players are sophomores.
The 6-foot tall Shoup, from Apalachee High in Winder, Georgia, had multi-hit performances in all three games this week and homered in two of them for the Panthers, slugging 1.250. He batted .583, scored 10 runs, added two doubles, three walks, three hit-by-pitches, and four stolen bases.
Leffel, a 5-11 righthander from College Park High in Concord, tossed a 9-inning, complete-game shutout allowing three hits, no walks, striking out 10 for the Rams in a 6-0 victory over Chabot. Leffel has been magnificent in 20 innings (three appearances) thus far, giving up just nine hits, recording a .65 WHIP and 0.90 ERA.
From Vintage High in Napa, the 6-foot, submarine-throwing righty Johnson became the second DVC pitcher in two weeks to earn top pitcher honors by firing a 5-hit, CG shutout, not recording a walk while totaling 11 Ks for the Vikings in a 6-0 win over Hartnell.
